    • The Habit time commitment for each Goals are grouped by Facets
  • Green bar is for the weekly proportion of time allocation you have recorded
  • Skin bar is for the daily proportion of time recorded

Energy for Personal Achievement

Personal Energy to Achieve more Goals

For the past four years, I have been keeping a diary where I have recorded my various energy and emotional states to find-out what makes me happy, makes me feel better.

I am in pre-retirement, now working as an independent consultant and keeping time for myself and for personal research on what makes people achieve and what’s not realized by most.

With the economy slowly coming-out of a recession and businesses and people struggling to get over it, it is more than ever important to keep you head above water and you need all of your personal energy to achieve success.

I keep saying to people, Life is not just about work, it's about effective and personal Living.

Effective Living

To get the most out of my life, I am constantly analyzing how I feel, what I achieve daily, and how my sense of satisfaction is related to those, across the various areas of my life.   While it takes a lot more than a blog or an article to understand the human mind and our own individual internal wiring, an important aspect of human performance is how Energy, and Emotions are directly related to personal performance and achievements.

Goal Success for a Better Life

Goal Success for a Better Life

If you want something better for your life, a better tomorrow, then Goals are your best approach to improve your life. Retired after working for 20 years in Aerospace science and engineering, Michael has adapted some High Technology Tools from Aviation to the Art of self-improvement. A simple 4 steps Goal Achievements System eases the journey.

Why Goals

Many times in my past, I had feelings of frustrations and not doing my best, and I have often turned to Goal setting to feel better, only to realize that the next day was brutally unchanged, and that it was going to take some serious action to actually go from a desire to change to actually seeing progress while actually feeling better, not forced into something “not me”. Change is challenging us, because we are creatures of habits, and changing habits takes energy. But with better habits comes better feelings and a sense of progress if habits are chosen to support goals.

Goal Setting, however, is only the first step. Once you define what you want to achieve, you need a support system for your Action and Progress. While there are common ways of getting things done that are common to all people (we're all humans!) we each have have our own particularities in how we work best, what motivates us, what drives us.

A System to get Goals Success

Therefore, any systems must make use of best practices that apply to most of us, while leaving us flexibility to find what makes us perform to our best potential. The good news is that science and technology have progressed sufficiently over the past few years to allow us to have Goals and Action Plans that we can optimize to match our own individual situations, yet are implementing some of the most widely accepted Goal Setting Success practices such as

  • Goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timed goals

Boosting Self Esteem with Martial Arts

Discussion on Sports effect on self-esteem

This question came up a few weeks ago on Yahoo Answers, which I like to review and occasionally answer questions from a holistic approach, mixed with a dose of science and personal experience. When my answer was chosen as the Best Answer, I was humbled, but glad and thought other people might benefit from the information it contained, so here it is:

Easy 10 points: Will this boost my self esteem and insecurness?

Hi, I'm 23 years old. I am, still am afraid of the world, just sligthly...

I thinking of trying martial arts for a month or two to see how that goes. Because in my opinion, I find it very ideal knowing that I can find something that interests me since I am a very motivated person in doing the things I LIKE.

And I'm not thinking of using martial arts in a sense of beating up someone who throws a punch at me, but only using it for really life threatening situations. Because honestly, everyone sees me as a very quiet, laid back, gentle individual.

I already took an introductory course, and beforehand did research on which martial arts style to choose that I like. I also finally saved up money to take the lessons.

And one thing I tend to notice about myself is if I'm paying for something out of my own pocket, I want to get my money's worth. So I WILL excersise. Any advice?

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

Yes taking martial arts lessons will probably help your self-esteem and confidence.

I did the same thing in my early twenties, and in addition to making me healthier and stronger, I started feeling better able to react to threatening situations. Just thinking and feeling safer made we look stronger and less likely to be attacked. Of course, you have to stick with the lessons for a little bit to get those benefits, so think positively about this, and make sure you enjoy your classes.

Some clubs have different styles and approach, so it is worthwhile visiting a few before your actually join: some of them are more spiritual, some more about learning and performing the moves right, while others are more involved in sparring (physical combats with contact). All of them are good for you if you like that style and you will get the benefit of becoming stronger and getting better reactions even if you don't do full contact sparring.

And finally, know why you are doing this, set realistic Goals with your instructor and Enjoy the journey !

I have a yellow belt karate, tried jiu-jitsu for a bit, didn't like the close contact .

Mind and Body Harmony with Goals

Mind and Body  - Separate things?

As a scientist

I like to look at a person as a whole system, just like an aircraft is made-up of a fuselage, engine, aircrew, controls,  and wings.  Have a look here at a speech I gave recently.  I look at the Mind and the Body as the two main components of us people.  There are lots of other ways to break us down into more details, but it is sometimes useful to look at the big picture.  The Mind - Body - Spirit approach is a simple but complete way to look at yourself.

Mind

Our Mind is usually regarded as what is stored in our head with neuronal connections and chemical interactions. Taken at the highest level, it includes what we think about consciously  but also unconsciously  emotions, senses, nervous system, and biological processes to control some of our vital body functions without us having to think about it (I wouldn't want my heart to stop when I fall asleep!).  The mind may also include a certain spiritual aspect of our thinking.

Body

This one is easy: our physical us is mostly what's not coded into your head, although your head and your physical brain are part of your body. That is the simplest way to divide humans and it's used this way quite a lot.  Our body is what allows us to move around and actually touch things and interact with people. It allows us to communicate, eat and reproduce.

Spirit

This generally represents something larger and more encompassing that just your internal mind in your head or your body.  Of course that is the case with religious faith,  but many people also think of the spiritual aspect of their lives as a higher purpose regarding with how they are linked to others, a greater good, or aspirations in some not necessarily scientifically understood manner.  It used to be that the spiritual aspect was impossible to measure in a scientific manner, but breakthrough in brain imaging and positive psychology has come up with new scientific evidence clearly indicating there are benefits of thinking like this and that it is definitely good for you and will likely make you feel happier and more positive.

The interaction between the body and the mind

This interaction is constant between our three essential components (Mind-Body-Spirit).  My mind thinks, and allows me to have ideas and concept to communicate to people, while my body translate these thought into actions, something that can be communicated.  It is important to keep this team working together: your mind must look after your body, or else the body will become weak. If your body weakens, your mind will lack energy to process information and direct actions properly, which will make the body even weaker.

Resources

Mind Resources for Goals

There is no shortage of information and advice on Goals, Success and Happiness.  In addition to the information I have created or referred to in the Goal Interceptor Website, these are some of the best books I have read:

Books

  • The 7 (and 8th) Habits of Highly Successful People, Free Press, Stephen R. Covey
    • This is an excellent book about the power Habits to improving our lives, not only to reach a single goal, but to have a very productive life in general, as well as to be Happy.
  • Brain Rules, Pear Press, John Medina
    • This book provides a simple and effective way to get more out of your thinking machine in our heads.  Ten simple to understand rules.  The book also includes a DVD to really make the points with some humouristic short stories.
  • Managing Your Mind, Oxford, Gillian Butler, Ph.d, Tony Hope, MD
    • This book takes a a scientific-based approach to describing how we think, and how that affects our actions, thinking and emotions.  Very complete coverage of mental fitness, basic Mind skills, Relationships, Mood, Mind and Body.

Dashboard

Online App for Simple and Effective Goal Tracking

It's been said often that a Goal worth doing is worth writing down.

Using a tool to set your Goals will make it easier to define your Goals and their Action Plans, which should be specific objectives for the goal, and success habits you need to do regularly to get there.

  • After you define your Core Values, Goals can be defined and organized in a way that makes sense to YOU.
  • You define the Habits that will move you along on a daily basis,
  • the Goal Interceptor App will give you access to your own control panel where you can view the status of your most important Goals and their Habits:

Your Life Information

  • See each of your Core Value and Goals, in order of priority you established
  • For each Goal, see the habits you identified as key, in order of how much they need to get done today
  • Color coded habits
    • Green Habits have been done today
    • Red Habits have less than 80% efficiency in getting done over the past 7 days, as compared to the taget you established.
    • Purple Habits are New habits which need more attention to get worked-into your daily schedule and become established habits.

Goals Reports and Visual Feedback

Clicking on the elements of the Dashboard gets things done (such as the green arrow to record) and gives you Visual reports and Graphs on your Progress with respect to:

  • Overall Goal Progress
  • Habits time spent, consistency and Journal
  • Balance between Work-Life or any other areas of your Life
    • Track actual time spent and compare to your Target
